LENA DUNHAM WELCOMES FIRST CHILD VIA SURROGATE

Lena Dunham, creator of the television series Girls, and her husband, Luis Felber, have had their first child through a surrogate. Dunham announced the birth of their daughter in an opinion piece for Vogue, published on Wednesday, in which she said she felt "bashful and dizzy with joy". She wrote that she sat on a hospital bed "between the legs of a woman I hadn't known a year ago" while waiting to meet the baby. Dunham said her daughter arrived 13 days late, coinciding with a solar eclipse and a meteor shower. She recalled forgetting to look down until she heard the baby's cry, then seeing her face "gasping just as she did," with eyes "wide and unfocused, taking in the light and shadow".

Dunham has written publicly about her struggles with fertility and chronic illness, including endometriosis, which she has said led to a hysterectomy when she was 31. In her memoir Famesick, published in April 2026, she wrote: "The moment I lost my fertility, I started searching for a baby." She described the difficulty of extracting her eggs during the pandemic, saying she alternated between being "obsessed with adoption" and "dying to locate a surrogate". In June 2025, Dunham told the Times that she and Felber were "in the process of expanding our family in new ways" but declined to elaborate, saying she wanted to "safely meet our children" first. In a 2020 essay for Harper's Magazine, she wrote that being unable to have a child might be "the only reason" she deserved to become a parent.

In the Vogue essay, Dunham described a midwife encouraging her to speak to her newborn daughter for the first time. She has previously written and spoken about her health over several years, including in the Harper's Magazine essay and Famesick. Neither Dunham nor Felber has given further detail about the surrogacy arrangement beyond the account published in Vogue. Dunham is known for creating, writing and starring in Girls, which aired on HBO.
