COLTS RECEIVER KEENAN ALLEN CHARGED OVER AUGUST DUI ARREST
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen has been formally charged with two misdemeanours over his arrest in August on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to multiple reports. The first charge is operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or above, classed as a Class A misdemeanour carrying a possible jail term of up to one year and a fine of up to $5,000. The second charge, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, carries a possible jail term of up to 60 days and a fine of up to $500. Allen was arrested on 30 August, and one report said he registered a blood alcohol content of .224.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard said any disciplinary action taken by the team would be handled internally, according to the report. Allen has continued playing for the Colts since his arrest, featuring in the team's loss to the Baltimore Ravens the previous Sunday, in which he recorded six catches for 32 yards. Both charges stem from the same arrest. Reports confirmed the charges more than two weeks after his arrest on 30 August.
Allen also faces possible discipline from the National Football League, which typically imposes a three-game suspension for alcohol-related offences under its conduct policy. Nathan Brown reported that the league's collective bargaining agreement allows for enhanced penalties in cases involving a high alcohol concentration equivalent reading such as Allen's. Neither the Colts nor the National Football League had confirmed what discipline, if any, would follow the charges. The criminal case over the two misdemeanour charges is proceeding separately through the courts.
