NVIDIA AND OPENAI BOSSES REJECT CALLS FOR NEW AI REGULATION

WED 16 SEP 2026 COMPANIES

Jensen Huang, chief executive of Nvidia, said this week that artificial intelligence firms do not need new laws or regulations, arguing market forces are enough to manage the risks. Speaking at the Dreamforce conference hosted by Salesforce in San Francisco, Huang said "we don't need any new laws, we don't need new regulations." Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, told the same conference that the public should trust AI firms to act safely, saying "the world should trust that we are going to do the right thing." He also said "I think the world is right to be afraid of this."

The comments follow an open letter from Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, urging AI labs to "voluntarily work together to set standards" amid warnings AI could cause "hundreds of billions of dollars in damage" within months. Aidan Gomez, chief executive of Cohere, dismissed the proposal as a "cartel by any other name," accusing the firms involved of seeking to "bend competition rules." Senator Bernie Sanders and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon have called for greater government oversight of AI. Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Meta, said every AI firm has the incentive "to take its own actions" on safety, warning "any lab that doesn't focus on alignment will fall behind."

Altman's comments were his first public remarks since a former Anthropic researcher claimed AI could "kill all humans" by the end of the decade if left unchecked. Altman said Congress had not created the "basic framework" for regulating AI that he expected after testifying in 2023. He confirmed OpenAI would delay its stock market flotation until 2027. Elon Musk has also backed Amodei's call to slow AI development.
