DOWMAN SCORES TWICE AS ARSENAL BEAT IPSWICH IN CARABAO CUP
Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Carabao Cup, with 16-year-old Max Dowman scoring twice on his first appearance of the season. Dowman opened the scoring after seven minutes with a solo effort and added a second early in the second half, also contributing to Arsenal's third and fourth goals, scored by Noni Madueke and stand-in captain Mikel Merino. In doing so, Dowman became only the second 16-year-old to score twice in a match for a Premier League club, matching a feat achieved by Wayne Rooney for Everton in 2002. The win took Arsenal to seven victories from seven matches to start the new season. Both managers made heavy changes to their starting line-ups, with a combined 19 alterations from their teams' Premier League fixtures at the weekend.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Dowman's quality, saying he delivers his actions "effortlessly" and calling it "a joy to have him," while stressing the need to manage the teenager's development carefully given the physical demands of English football. Arteta said Arsenal must ensure Dowman is given the right preparation and context whenever he plays, adding that opportunities in England differ from those in other European leagues for a player of his age. Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil said Dowman's trusted role in a high-calibre squad at such a young age reflected well on his prospects. O'Neil also described facing Arsenal's strongest talent as "the most extreme test that you can face" for his heavily rotated side.
Arsenal previously met Ipswich in this competition in 2011, when Ipswich won, though Arsenal went on to reach that season's final, which they lost to Birmingham City. Dowman came through Arsenal's Hale End academy, and Arteta has previously drawn comparisons between him and Lionel Messi. Arteta indicated Dowman will continue to be selected on a managed basis rather than as a guaranteed starter, saying he must keep earning his minutes. No further fixture details were confirmed in the reports.
