JEAN SMART WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT EMMY FOR HACKS
Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy series for "Hacks" at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday. It was her fifth consecutive win in the category and her eighth Emmy overall, tying the record for most acting wins held by Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Allison Janney also reached eight wins on the same night. Smart became the first woman to win the award for every season of a show's run. Kate O'Flynn opened the ceremony's announcements by winning supporting actress in a comedy series for "Widow's Bay".
Nineteen awards were presented at Monday's ceremony. Noah Wyle won lead actor in a drama series for "The Pitt", and Rhea Seehorn won lead actress in a drama series for "Pluribus". Matthew Rhys won lead actor in a limited series or movie for "The Beast in Me". One report said he won two lead actor awards at the ceremony, while the confirmed winners' list shows one. Tom Pelphrey won supporting actor in a drama series for "Task", and Allison Janney won supporting actress in a drama series for "The Diplomat". Stephen Root won supporting actor in a comedy series for "Widow's Bay", and "The Traitors" won reality competition series.
The ceremony followed the Creative Arts Emmys held the previous weekend, when dozens of winners were announced. Mariska Hargitay, who hosted Monday's ceremony, won two trophies during that earlier weekend. Smart's eighth win puts her alongside Leachman and Louis-Dreyfus at the top of the all-time list for acting wins. Janney's award on Monday brought her to the same tally, making her the third performer to hold that record.
