MON 14 SEP 2026 US SPORTS

Jaylen Mbakwe was taken to hospital by ambulance after colliding with teammate Jordan Walker during Georgia Tech's game against Tennessee at Bobby Dodd Stadium, according to reports. The collision happened early in the third quarter, with Georgia Tech trailing 24-10. Mbakwe's head struck Walker's knee as the pair tried to make a play. Medical staff attended to Mbakwe for several minutes before he was stretchered off and taken to Grady Hospital. He gave the crowd a thumbs-up as he was carried off, and Walker was forced out of the game.

Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key said Mbakwe was talking and responsive when medical staff moved him from the field. Key said he would not speculate on the injury without medical information. Mbakwe posted on X the following day that it was a "minor setback for a major comeback," saying he was fine and feeling well and thanking people for their messages. He said Georgia Tech's goals remained in front of the team and asked fans to stay behind the players. Tennessee went on to win the game 45-24, leaving Georgia Tech with a 0-2 record.

According to the reports, Tennessee's DeSean Bishop ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns as the Volunteers gained 299 yards on the ground, while freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon threw two touchdown passes. Georgia Tech had earlier led 10-7 after freshman Trae Stevenson Jr blocked a Tennessee punt, with Elgin Sessions recovering the ball and running it in for a touchdown. The reports said it was the first time Georgia Tech had returned a blocked punt for a touchdown since 2004. No further update on Mbakwe's condition had been reported at the time of writing.
