RUSSIAN DRONE HITS KYIV-WARSAW TRAIN NEAR POLISH BORDER

SUN 13 SEP 2026 INTERNATIONAL

A Russian drone struck a passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw, hitting the line two kilometres from the Polish border near the Yahodyn crossing, officials said. No casualties were reported on board. Former prime minister Boris Johnson was travelling nearby, returning from a security conference in Kyiv, and said he was told at 5am on Sunday to prepare for evacuation after another train behind his was attacked. He said he was not evacuated or delayed. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, called the strike part of "Putin's terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and Nato."

The strike came amid a wider overnight assault in which Ukraine's air force said more than 450 Russian drones and missiles were launched, with 405 drones and four missiles intercepted. Ukrainian officials said the attacks killed at least six people and injured more than 40. Western Ukraine, usually quieter than Kyiv or the eastern front line, was said to have been hit hard. A lorry near the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing was also struck, Ukrainian and Polish authorities said. Russia's defence ministry said it had targeted infrastructure used to move military cargo into Ukraine, according to a Reuters report.

The strikes prompted air-raid warnings in Poland, which borders western Ukraine. Mr Johnson said Russia had killed 1,700 staff of Ukrainian Railways and called the railway strike "random and senseless." He called for Ukraine to be given greater air defences and urged the unfreezing of Russian assets — more than €140 billion held in Belgium and about £10 billion in London — saying Britain "could show a lead." Mr Sybiha said the strike was "not just a continuation" of attacks on Ukraine's state borders.
