TOTTENHAM MANAGER DE ZERBI BLAMES INJURIES AS SIDE SEEKS FIRST WIN

SAT 12 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Tottenham Hotspur have failed to win any of their opening four Premier League matches this season, despite spending more than £300 million on squad recruitment over the summer. The club face Everton on Saturday afternoon seeking their first victory. Manager Roberto De Zerbi attributed the poor start partly to injuries, stating that his side are better than last season and that he believes in his players' qualities and potential.

Tottenham currently have four players sidelined, with midfielder James Maddison expected to return this weekend. De Zerbi, who took charge with a remit to deliver immediate success, acknowledged that scoring has been a problem, saying his side "are not winning, we are not scoring". The manager noted that integrating a substantially changed squad takes time, though he maintained optimism about the group's prospects despite the absence of results-based evidence of improvement.

A goalless draw against Everton extended Tottenham's run without a win. The club faces an international break before their next fixture, and De Zerbi will want to show progress before the extended stoppage. The manager has been given significant backing in the transfer market, creating pressure to deliver European qualification at minimum, given the scale of investment in the squad.
