MISSOURI BEATS KANSAS 38-21 IN FIRST BORDER WAR GAME SINCE 2005

SAT 12 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Missouri defeated Kansas 38-21 on Friday night in their first meeting since 29 October 2005, extending their winning streak against their biggest rival to five consecutive victories. The Tigers scored 24 unanswered points after halftime, capitalising on two turnovers by Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall. Jamal Roberts ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, whilst Donovan Olugbode and Cayden Lee caught touchdown passes for Missouri, who improved to 2-0 on the season.

Kansas, now 1-1, has not defeated Missouri since 29 November 2008. Marshall finished with 168 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Robert Woodyard Jr recorded both turnovers for the Tigers, recovering a fumble early in the second half and intercepting a pass on Kansas's next drive. Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz said his team overcame undisciplined penalties and poor special teams play to secure the victory on the road.

Drinkwitz criticised Kansas's approach to the rivalry in remarks made after the game. The Border War began as an armed conflict over slavery along the state line in the years before the Civil War. Drinkwitz stated he was "embarrassed" by the way Kansas had referenced this history during the buildup to the match, saying "I'm just glad the whole right-versus-wrong crap got settled on the football field." Kansas coach Lance Leipold said his team struggled against ranked opposition and committed costly mistakes.
