NORRIS TAKES POLE AT MADRID'S MADRING CIRCUIT
Lando Norris secured pole position for McLaren at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, beating Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli by 0.011 seconds in the final qualifying session. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished third, 0.140 seconds behind Norris, whilst Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari claimed fourth place. Charles Leclerc in the second Ferrari took fifth, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and McLaren's Oscar Piastri in seventh.
Norris's pole came as a significant turnaround after he had qualified seventh in the second session and trailed Hamilton by 0.449 seconds after the opening runs in the final session. The Madring street circuit in Madrid was a new venue for Formula 1, with drivers having raised concerns beforehand about its high-risk nature, including tricky corner entries and walls positioned close to exit lines. The qualifying session ran without incidents, despite two red flags during final practice earlier in the day. Norris described his final lap as among the best of his career, saying everything came together and his performance was "almost perfect".
The session had initially appeared likely to be contested between Antonelli and the Ferrari drivers, with Verstappen potentially in contention. However, both Ferraris faded during the closing stages, allowing Norris to move to the front with what he characterised as a breathtaking final lap. Norris expressed surprise at his result, stating he had felt tense around the circuit before managing to relax during his decisive lap.
