LIAM DAVIES BEATS WU YIZE TO REACH ENGLISH OPEN QUARTER-FINALS
Liam Davies defeated world champion Wu Yize 4-1 in the third round of the English Open in Brentwood on 10 September 2026. Davies, a Welsh prospect aged 20, established a 3-0 lead and recorded a break of 105 in the second frame to secure his first ranking event quarter-final appearance. Wu, representing China, failed to produce his characteristic dynamic form during the match.
Davies will face fellow Welsh player Mark Williams in Friday's quarter-final. Williams, a three-time world champion aged 51, defeated England's Barry Hawkins 4-1 in a late-night match, recording breaks of 76, 103 and 63. England's Mark Selby, runner-up at the British Open the previous week and winner of the China Open in August, was eliminated by Kyren Wilson in a 4-3 encounter after leading 2-0. Judd Trump, recently deposed as world number one, defeated Scotland's Anthony McGill 4-3 in a closely contested match. Shaun Murphy advanced after a lengthy match against China's Pang Junxu, securing victory with a 103 break in the deciding frame. Ali Carter, Zhou Yuelong and Ding Junhui also progressed, with Zhou recording a break of 141 in his 4-2 victory.
The quarter-final round takes place on Friday, with four matches scheduled. Davies and Williams will contest one semi-final pairing, whilst Trump faces Murphy in an all-English quarter-final. Zhou Yuelong plays Ali Carter and Ding Junhui faces Kyren Wilson in the remaining matches.
