ESPN JOURNALIST MISPRONOUNCES ZVEREV NAME ON AIR DURING US OPEN COVERAGE

FRI 11 SEP 2026 TENNIS

ESPN journalist Malika Andrews mispronounced Alexander Zverev's name as "Sausage Zverev" during a broadcast discussion of the US Open. The error prompted online discussion and criticism from tennis fans. Andrews hosts NBA Today and was the first woman to host an NBA Draft in 2022, though she has only recently begun covering tennis for ESPN from 2026 onwards.

Andrews has previously covered Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the US Open for the network. In September, she received criticism from tennis fans for stating that Elena Rybakina had the "easiest" draw in the tournament so far. Some online commentators questioned her preparedness for transitioning from NBA coverage to tennis reporting following the pronunciation mistake.

Zverev has not publicly commented on the incident. The German player is ranked world No. 2 and was scheduled to face Karen Khachanov in the US Open semi-final. If he progresses, he will face either Frances Tiafoe or Ben Shelton in the final. Zverev won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2026.
