MAN ARRESTED OVER VIOLENT DISORDER AT PORTSMOUTH ANTI-MIGRANT PROTESTS
Hampshire Police arrested a 42-year-old man from Paulsgrove on suspicion of violent disorder and assaulting a constable on Friday. The arrest followed anti-migrant protests in Portsmouth on Sunday, when demonstrators gathered after approximately 140 people arrived at the coast aboard a small boat. The man remains in custody and is the first person arrested in connection with the protests, though police indicated further arrests are anticipated.
The protests on Sunday evening saw demonstrators block roads for extended periods and damage official vehicles. Video footage showed protesters gathering near the waterfront and shouting "stop the boats". Hampshire Police recorded that a small number of officers sustained injuries at the scene. The 140 people who arrived by small boat were intercepted and brought ashore before being transferred to Manston immigration centre in Kent for processing.
Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson stated that violence and criminal damage have no place in protest activity. He characterised Sunday evening's events as violent public disorder rather than peaceful demonstration, and said the force would investigate thoroughly and pursue robust action against those responsible. Police indicated they remain committed to maintaining safety across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight during the investigation.
