SHANE MACGOWAN ESTATE VALUED AT £4.8M IN PROBATE RECORDS
Probate records have revealed that Shane MacGowan, frontman and lyricist of The Pogues, left an estate with a gross and net value of £4.8 million following his death in November 2023. MacGowan's wife, Irish author and journalist Victoria Mary Clarke, was named as the sole executor and sole beneficiary of his entire real and personal property. The will was executed on 14 March 2018, eight months before the couple married in Copenhagen. MacGowan's sister, novelist Siobhan MacGowan, was designated as the secondary beneficiary should Clarke have predeceased him.
MacGowan died aged 65 from pneumonia whilst also suffering from viral encephalitis, weeks before what would have been his 66th birthday on Christmas Day. The musician's funeral took place in County Tipperary and was attended by fans and high-profile figures. Performances and tributes were delivered by Australian musician Nick Cave and actor Johnny Depp.
The release of probate records concludes the formal administration of MacGowan's estate. The disclosure provides public confirmation of the financial legacy left by the musician, whose songwriting defined The Pogues' output during their decades as one of Ireland's most significant musical exports.
