BEN SIMMONS DISPUTES PATRICK BEVERLEY'S CRITICISM OF NBA ABSENCE
Ben Simmons has responded to criticism from former NBA player Patrick Beverley regarding his time away from professional basketball. Beverley argued on his podcast that players should not be permitted to leave the league and return when circumstances improve, and suggested Simmons had quit rather than persevered like other players. Simmons rejected this characterisation in a social media comment, stating he had worked intensively during his absence and framed his time away as necessary medical recovery rather than an escape from competition.
Beverley's comments centred on the premise that players facing pressure, poor form, media criticism or general stress should not be able to step away and return later. He drew a contrast with Victor Oladipo, who pursued opportunities in the G League whilst working toward another NBA opportunity. Simmons' absence followed recurring physical problems, including chronic lumbar nerve impingement and multiple herniated discs affecting his lower back and legs, which he said prevented him from performing at his normal level on court.
Simmons stated he remained grateful for the opportunity to play professional basketball and disputed suggestions that his comeback represented receiving an unearned second chance. The dispute reflects broader disagreement over whether extended absences from competition due to injury constitute stepping away from the sport or necessary rehabilitation. Simmons is preparing to return to NBA play following his medical recovery period.
