MANCHESTER UNITED BANS 685 ACCOUNTS IN TICKET TOUTING INVESTIGATION
Manchester United has banned 685 accounts and sanctioned or warned 464 supporters following an investigation into ticket touting that began in July. The club's actions triggered widespread protests from supporters concerned about losing season tickets without prior explanation. Manchester United subsequently revised its warning emails, acknowledged underestimating how many fans shared account details, and recognised their actions had caused distress to some supporters.
Of the cases concluded, 468 were resolved after supporters provided information that satisfactorily explained the activity identified. A further 226 accounts received final warnings where misuse was identified beyond account sharing, though the club found no evidence of financial gain. Manchester United's independent appeals panel reduced 238 accounts from season ticket bans to restrictions on home ticket forwarding and away match applications. The club maintained that bans were issued where there was significant misuse of the ticketing system for financial gain.
In total, 499 cases resulted in one-season bans upheld by the appeals panel, 73 received bans that were not appealed, and 113 season tickets were banned after supporters failed to respond to repeated information requests. Manchester United defended its right to tackle touting while acknowledging it had mishandled communication with supporters during the initial investigation phase. Supporters who received season bans will be able to join the waiting list to apply for tickets again after one season.
