BREAD AHEAD TOLD TO LEAVE BOROUGH MARKET OVER SUCCESS

FRI 11 SEP 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Bread Ahead, a bakery based at Borough Market in London, has been informed by market management that it must leave the site, according to a statement posted on Instagram by founder Matthew Jones. The bakery was told it had become "too successful" and cited its growing international franchise presence as a reason for the decision. Bread Ahead operates locations in Dubai, Bangkok and Saudi Arabia, with a first United States outlet scheduled to open in New York in November.

The bakery was founded at Borough Market and operates its baking school from the site. Bread Ahead is known for developing distinctive baked goods, including a crème brûlée doughnut that gained attention on social media. In his statement, Mr Jones described starting the business without corporate backing or major investment, describing Borough Market as the place where "Bread Ahead grew up". He stated: "We haven't been bought by a multinational. We haven't become a faceless chain. We are still founder-led."

The decision has attracted criticism on social media, with observers describing it as a "ridiculous management decision". Mr Jones publicly questioned the rationale for the closure, stating: "I honestly never imagined that being successful could put our home at risk." Borough Market has not issued a public statement regarding the matter. The bakery's departure would mark the loss of a long-established tenant from the market.
