EZI MAGBEGOR OUT FOR SEASON AFTER WORLD CUP ACL INJURY
Ezi Magbegor, Australian basketball captain, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during a FIBA World Cup group stage match against Italy on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season. The injury occurred with 5 minutes 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Magbegor landed awkwardly after contact from Italy's Lorela Cubaj whilst driving towards the basket. She was helped off the court by Australian team staff and took no further part in the game, though she returned to the bench during the second quarter.
Scans confirmed the ACL rupture, which will require surgery and rehabilitation, according to a statement from Basketball Australia. Australia defeated Italy 82–80 in the match, securing qualification to the World Cup quarterfinals. The injury comes during what one report described as a frustrating 2026 season for Magbegor. Her absence removes a key player from the Seattle Storm's roster for the remainder of their campaign.
Basketball Australia said the team would support Magbegor through her recovery period, citing her character and resilience. The organisation has announced upcoming surgery, though no timeline for Magbegor's return to competition has been confirmed. The injury represents a significant setback for both the player and the Storm as the WNBA season continues.
