MCILROY OPENS IRISH OPEN DEFENCE WITH ONE-UNDER 69
Rory McIlroy shot one-under 69 in the opening round of the Amgen Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, finishing four shots behind leader Joaquin Niemann, who recorded five-under 65. McIlroy made three birdies on holes 2, 4, and 15, but a double bogey on the par-four 13th hindered his round. He finished tied for 17th after the first day.
McIlroy's double bogey on the 13th followed a 288-yard drive that found a fairway bunker. His approach shot from the bunker advanced only a yard, and he ultimately missed a 10-foot bogey putt before tapping in from 14 inches for the double. The par-four 13th proved the toughest hole of the day, with 13 golfers recording double bogeys there. McIlroy told the post-round conference that he attempted to take too much club from the bunker, which "backfired" on him, though he said he struck the ball well otherwise and felt he remained in contention.
Difficult playing conditions affected the field throughout the day. Strong winds and slow play created challenges that forced many golfers to return early the following morning to complete their opening rounds. McIlroy said that despite the tough conditions and the setback on the 13th, shooting under par meant he retained a reasonable chance to defend his title, stating that "a good day tomorrow gets me right back in it".
