HOLGER RUNE TO RETURN TO TENNIS AT DAVIS CUP AFTER 11-MONTH INJURY LAYOFF

Holger Rune will make his competitive return to professional tennis at the Davis Cup on 18 September, marking his first match in 11 months following an Achilles tendon injury. The Danish player tore his Achilles whilst competing at the Nordic Open in October 2025 and subsequently underwent surgery. Rune announced his comeback on 8 September via Instagram, stating he had completed rehabilitation and was "so excited" to resume playing. He will represent Denmark against Bulgaria in a World Group I tie in Copenhagen.

Rune spent two weeks in a cast following surgery before beginning physiotherapy with his medical team. By February 2026, he had returned to practising tennis. During his recovery, Rune consulted with a footballer who had sustained an identical injury and returned to competition within four and a half months, though Rune noted that strict medical guidelines prevented skipping rehabilitation steps. His recovery period also included time spent with family and friends in Denmark and watching films, providing respite from the demands of professional tennis.

Rune's ranking has fallen significantly during his absence. He held a career-high ranking of No. 4 and stood at No. 11 when injured; he currently ranks No. 133. Playing at home in Copenhagen offers Rune what he described as an "ideal stage" for his return after nearly a year away from competitive tennis.
