GOOGLE RELEASES NATIVE GEMINI APP FOR WINDOWS 10 AND 11

THU 10 SEP 2026 AI

Google has released a native Gemini app for Windows 10 and 11 personal computers, following a similar release for Mac in April. The app provides access to Google's AI tools, including image generation, video creation and AI search, through a single desktop application. Users can launch Gemini by pressing Alt and the spacebar. Google stated that the app is designed for quick access to AI assistance alongside other applications and tools.

Features available in the Windows app depend on the user's subscription tier. The app integrates with Google services including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs, allowing users to send tasks to Gemini Spark, Google's AI agent software. Image generation uses Nano Banana, whilst video generation requires a Google AI subscription and uses Gemini Omni. Gemini Spark and video generation capabilities are restricted to users aged 18 or older. The app supports multiple AI models including Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro, with an "Extended thinking" option for complex problem-solving tasks. The interface resembles existing AI chat applications, with a left sidebar for conversation history and a search bar as the primary interface.

Google has confirmed that additional features will be rolled out for the desktop app over time. The company describes the app as "lightweight and quiet" to avoid slowing down Windows systems. The Windows release brings the Gemini experience to a broader user base, as the Mac version has received new voice capabilities and screen awareness features since its April launch.
