CARGO SHIP FIRE IN QINGDAO KILLS AT LEAST 20, FIVE MISSING
At least 20 people were killed and five were reported missing after a fire broke out aboard a cargo ship docked in Qingdao, eastern China, on Thursday morning, according to state media reports. The vessel, identified as the Ocean Melody and flying a Liberian flag, caught fire at approximately 11:15 am local time whilst undergoing repairs at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Of the 42 people aboard, 12 were safely evacuated and five others were hospitalised. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the fire was extinguished by 2:30 pm.
The incident prompted a rare direct response from China's leadership. President Xi Jinping issued "important instructions" calling for urgent search and rescue operations for missing persons. Premier Li Qiang urged efforts to locate trapped individuals and ensure the injured received medical treatment whilst preventing secondary disasters. Xi instructed all regions and relevant departments to "draw profound lessons from this incident" and conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, alongside measures to rectify fire hazards and prevent similar occurrences.
Qingdao serves as a major shipping hub on China's northeastern coast, and Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding is one of the country's significant shipyards. The scale of the incident and the involvement of top-level officials in response indicated the seriousness with which China's government treated the accident. The investigation into the fire's cause remained ongoing at the time of reporting.
