Rollie Sheldon, a pitcher who played for the New York Yankees in the early 1960s, died on August 31 at the age of 89. The Yankees issued a statement mourning his passing and extending condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. Sheldon began his professional baseball career with the Yankees in 1960, playing alongside Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris during the final phase of the franchise's mid-century dominance.

Roland Frank Sheldon was born on December 17, 1936, in Putnam, Connecticut. He attended Woodstock Elementary School and Woodstock Academy, where he played multiple sports including basketball, football, track and baseball. After graduating in 1954, Sheldon enlisted in the US Air Force at age seventeen and a half, serving from June 1956 to September 1958 and stationed at Spangdahlem Air Force Base in Germany. During his military service, he played baseball in Europe and threw a no-hitter. After leaving the Air Force, he attended Texas A&M with support from the G.I. Bill, a US law passed in 1944 that assists military veterans with college tuition, employment and home purchases.

Sheldon later reflected on his unlikely journey from a Boston Red Sox fan to a Yankees player. "The Yankees will always be in my DNA, and I guess I'm in their DNA," he said of his time with the organisation. His career with New York coincided with one of the most successful periods in the franchise's history, cementing his place in the team's legacy.
