XBOX PUBLISHES KOJIMA'S PHYSINT AFTER SONY CANCELS PROJECT
Xbox will publish Physint, an upcoming action-espionage game from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, after PlayStation cancelled the project in June. The announcement came in a series of statements from PlayStation, Xbox, Kojima Productions and Kojima himself on 10 September. Sony described the decision as a "difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions," whilst maintaining that the "relationship remains strong." Kojima stated on X that he received an "unexpected" cancellation notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June and spent the following three months seeking a new publishing partner.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company was "honoured" that Kojima had chosen to work with Xbox on the title. Physint will be Xbox's second upcoming Kojima Productions game, following OD, which Xbox is already set to publish. Sharma framed the acquisition as reflecting Xbox's priorities of supporting "the kind of creativity" that challenges conventions. Both companies indicated plans to extend their relationship beyond games into film and television, though no further details were disclosed at the time of announcement.
Kojima described Xbox as "a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future." The shift represents a significant publishing change for Kojima Productions, which had worked with Sony on both Death Stranding games. Asha Sharma stated in an earlier memo to Xbox staff that the company would focus on "our strongest franchises and biggest new ideas," a commitment demonstrated by securing a title of Physint's scale.
