GAUFF BEATS ANDREEVA IN US OPEN QUARTERFINAL AFTER RACKET THROW

THU 10 SEP 2026 W TENNIS

Coco Gauff defeated Mirra Andreeva in a US Open quarterfinal after the Russian teenager threw her racket toward her bench during the third set. Andreeva held two match points in the second-set tiebreak but failed to convert either opportunity, including one on her own serve. Gauff broke Andreeva's serve at the start of the deciding set to take a 2-1 lead, prompting Andreeva to throw her racket during the changeover.

Andreeva made a strong start to her maiden US Open quarterfinal, racing to a 4-0 lead and taking the opening set 6-2. Gauff committed fourteen unforced errors in that first set compared with five from Andreeva. The second set became more competitive, with both players struggling for consistency; Gauff finished with 26 unforced errors and Andreeva with 23, and both were broken twice during the set.

In her post-match press conference, Andreeva explained her emotional outburst, stating she had been holding back her emotions through the first two sets. She said that after the missed match points, she felt she needed to release her frustration, and at that moment she did not consider what message her reaction might send to her opponent. The loss kept hopes of an all-American US Open final alive for Gauff, who advanced to the semi-final stage.
