MATTHEW BRENNAN WINS FIFTH VUELTA STAGE IN GRAND TOUR DEBUT
Matthew Brennan claimed victory on stage 17 of the Vuelta a España on Wednesday, winning a bunch sprint in Seville ahead of Jordi Meeus and Magnus Cort Nielsen. The 185-kilometre stage from Dos Hermanas to Seville finished on flat terrain, setting up a sprint finish. Brennan launched his attack from Cort's wheel in the closing metres to secure the win. The victory marked his fifth stage success at the race, achieved in his debut appearance at a three-week grand tour.
Brennan's achievement places him among an elite group of riders. He became the youngest ever to win five stages in a grand tour and the youngest to claim back-to-back Vuelta stages. He is only the second British rider to win four or more stages in the same grand tour, after Mark Cavendish. Marcel Kittel won five stages of the Vuelta in 2017. Brennan's win extended his team Visma-Lease a Bike's tally to seven stage victories at this year's race, a record for the team at a single grand tour. Tadej Pogacar is among other riders to have claimed five or more stages in a single Grand Tour, though he withdrew from this year's Vuelta after suffering a season-ending injury in a crash on stage eight.
In the general classification, Enric Mas maintained his overall lead of 2 minutes 6 seconds over Felix Gall, with four-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic a further four seconds behind. Stage 18 on Thursday will feature a 32-kilometre individual time trial from El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera, which officials described as one of the last chances for Mas's rivals to reduce the gap in the general classification battle.
