RUTGERS FOOTBALL HONOURS 37 ALUMNI LOST IN 9/11 ATTACKS

WED 09 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Rutgers Football will wear custom uniforms on Friday, 11 September 2026, to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and honour 37 university alumni who died that day. The Scarlet Knights will face Boston College at Alumni Stadium in a scarlet uniform combination featuring "NEVER FORGET" written down the sides of the trousers. The team helmets will display the number 37 to commemorate those lost. Head coach Greg Schiano has made honouring the 9/11 victims an annual practice within the programme's culture.

New Brunswick, where Rutgers is located, sits less than 40 miles from Manhattan, making the loss particularly personal to the university community. Schiano has previously stated that he discusses the anniversary with his team each year, even with players who have no direct memory of the attacks. "It's still real important, right? 37 Rutgers alums lost that day," Schiano said in his weekly press conference. "Personally, a guy who I grew up with just two doors down was lost that day. A lot of us all lost people that are from this area and also what it did in changing the world."

The uniform design reflects an evolution in how the programme has marked the anniversary over time. At the 20th anniversary in 2021, Rutgers wore a solid black number 37 on a silver helmet with the names of lost alumni embedded in the decal. The 25th anniversary design represents a shift toward a bolder display intended to reach a national audience.
