HAALAND SCORES TWICE AS CITY WIN AT PORTO IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

WED 09 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City defeated FC Porto 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday evening in the 2026/27 Champions League league phase. Haaland headed home shortly after half-time to break a goalless first half, then added a second goal in stoppage time. The win gave Manchester City all three points from their away fixture. Manager Enzo Maresca's side are aiming to finish in the top eight of the league phase to qualify directly for the last 16.

The match proved ill-tempered, with Haaland clashing with Porto midfielder Pablo Rosario in the closing stages; both players received yellow cards after teammates separated them. Earlier in the match, Haaland expressed frustration with Manchester City's £85.7m summer signing from Lille, Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old midfielder making his first start. Bouaddi declined to pass to Haaland when the striker was through on goal, instead playing a ball to the left. In his post-match interview, Haaland praised Bouaddi's overall performance, describing him as a "gem" and saying he had been "amazing" in training. Fellow City recruit Enzo Fernández praised Haaland's display, with reports characterising Haaland as "an animal" for his contribution to the victory.

The win came despite Manchester City failing to impress overall according to post-match assessment, with the team securing the result through their forward's individual performance rather than convincing team display.
