NEWCASTLE UNITED SIGN GOALKEEPER EWEN JAOUEN FOR £18.5M

Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims, with the fee reported at approximately £18.5 million. Jaouen completed a medical ahead of finalising the transfer. The French goalkeeper spent the 2024–25 season on loan at USL Dunkerque in France. He is a France Under-21 international and stands at 6ft 6in tall.

Jaouen has never played top-flight football, having operated in Ligue 2 with Stade de Reims. He kept 15 clean sheets in a single league campaign, a figure not matched by a Reims goalkeeper since Edouard Mendy. Goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon, who worked with Jaouen at USL Dunkerque, has compared his profile to that of Thibaut Courtois when Lollichon first encountered Courtois at 17. Lollichon previously served as Chelsea's head of goalkeeping, working with Petr Cech, Courtois and Mendy across his career.

Lollichon has described Jaouen as a player who can observe and adapt quickly, while acknowledging that an immediate step into the Premier League would carry risk. He stated that Newcastle's likely objective is for Jaouen to absorb the new level during his first season rather than play regularly. Clubs from across Europe monitored Jaouen throughout last season. Lollichon said he sees no ceiling on Jaouen's development provided the conditions around him are supportive.
