IOWA MARCHING BAND MEMBER REMOVED FROM LIFE SUPPORT AFTER CARDIAC ARREST
Derek Phillips, a member of the University of Iowa marching band, was removed from life support on Monday, two days after collapsing shortly before halftime of a football game against Northern Illinois. Phillips suffered cardiac arrest in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Medical evaluation determined that Phillips had suffered severe brain damage. His family decided to remove him from life support following the assessment.
Phillips collapsed during the game on Saturday. The incident occurred in searing heat whilst he was performing with the marching band. His family released a statement on social media following the decision to remove life support. The statement read: "Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family, and enveloped in the music he loved so much. Thank you for every prayer, every shared experience, and every bit of love you've given to our boy."
The incident has raised questions about university policies governing the performance and attire of marching band members during periods of extreme heat. No statement has been released by the University of Iowa addressing whether existing heat protocols were followed during the game or whether policy changes will be considered in response to Phillips's death.
