BBC CANCELS DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL AND SEEKS CO-PRODUCERS
The BBC has cancelled a planned Doctor Who Christmas special scheduled for 2026. The corporation announced the decision on Wednesday, stating it had been made "after careful consideration" and "had not been taken lightly." The BBC, showrunner Russell T Davies, and independent production company Bad Wolf reached the decision collectively. The BBC acknowledged the cancellation "will be disappointing for fans."
The last series of Doctor Who aired in May 2025 and marked the final appearance of Ncuti Gatwa, who had announced his departure after two series. The series finale included the surprise reintroduction of Billie Piper, who previously played Rose Tyler in the show. The BBC said at the time that "just how and why she is back remains to be seen." Doctor Who had been co-produced with Bad Wolf since 2023, and Disney+ had held a co-production and international distribution deal covering 26 episodes before its involvement ended in 2025.
The BBC has now opened a process inviting production companies to put themselves forward as co-producers on the next series of Doctor Who. The broadcaster framed Wednesday's announcements as setting out the next phase of the long-running science-fiction programme. No confirmed casting for the next Doctor has been announced. The corporation has not provided a timeline for when the next series will air.
