TENNESSEE LINEBACKER PLEDGES $427 PER TACKLE TO CANCER RESEARCH
Arion Carter, a linebacker for Tennessee, has pledged $427 to cancer research for each tackle he records during the 2026 season. The amount corresponds to the cost of a flight paid by an agent, which formed the basis of an NCAA eligibility case against Carter. According to reports, Carter declared for the 2026 NFL Draft in December 2025 and signed with an agent who covered the flight cost to an NFL pre-draft training site. Carter withdrew from the draft in January after a turf-toe injury required surgery and repaid the full amount.
The NCAA initially imposed a three-game suspension for what it classified as a Level III extra-benefit violation. Following Tennessee's appeal, the ban was reduced to two games in July, then further reduced to one game in August by athletic director Danny White. Carter missed only the opening game against Furman, which Tennessee won 56–9, and was named a game-day captain that day. If Carter matches his tackle total from last season, when he recorded 76 tackles across 10 games, the pledge would total $32,452 by season's end.
Carter selected cancer research as the beneficiary of his pledge following a personal experience. His girlfriend, Mariah Bryant, was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in February 2026. Carter has stated that Bryant is currently cancer-free and undergoing remission treatment. In June, Carter shaved his head in solidarity with Bryant during her chemotherapy, then shaved his own head as well. The tackle-per-donation initiative converts what Carter described as a negative situation into a positive fundraising effort.
