EIGHT-YEAR-OLD KILLED IN ISRAELI STRIKE ON GAZA CITY
An eight-year-old Palestinian girl, Wafaa Yousef Nabil Akila, was killed alongside her father, Youssef Nabil Rabah Akila, in an Israeli drone strike on a vehicle in western Gaza City on Sunday. The strike occurred hours after Wafaa attended the first day of the new school year. According to medical officials at al-Shifa hospital, six other Palestinians were wounded in the attack. The Israeli military stated the strike had targeted a Hamas member and said it was examining the outcome.
The vehicle was struck near the Hamid intersection in western Gaza. Photographs taken before the strike showed Wafaa smiling in a blue school uniform. Images from the aftermath showed her schoolbooks and supplies scattered across the charred wreckage. Footage published by witnesses showed men at the scene holding strands of hair from the child, with one man saying "This is all that's left, world."
The strike occurred as discussions of a ceasefire in Gaza have continued. Witnesses at the scene disputed the characterisation of a truce, with one stating "There has been no ceasefire. Every day there are massacres. Every day there is killing. Every day children are dying." The incident drew reactions online, with many pointing to the continued loss of civilian life in Gaza.
