EDU LEAVES NOTTINGHAM FOREST AFTER YEAR IN POST

MON 07 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Edu has departed Nottingham Forest as global head of football after just over a year in the role. His contract is believed to have been terminated. The former Arsenal midfielder has not attended a Forest match since February. His exit follows a falling-out with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked in September.

Edu was appointed in July 2025 with responsibility for Forest, Greek side Olympiacos and Portuguese club Rio Ave, all owned by Evangelos Marinakis. He joined from Arsenal, where he had served as the club's first sporting director since 2022 and was credited with bringing Mikel Arteta to the club. During his time at Arsenal, Edu won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups as a player. Forest went through four managers during the 2024-25 season, with Nuno's departure hinting at internal tensions between the manager and Marinakis.

George Syrianos, Forest's chief football officer, will assume Edu's responsibilities. The club does not plan to appoint a replacement. Edu's departure comes after former Olympiacos vice-president Theodore Giannikos was appointed chief executive of Forest last week, replacing Lina Souloukou, who left the role at the end of the previous season.
