EU PLEDGES €200M SUPPORT TO GREENLAND AMID TRUMP TAKEOVER CALLS
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has pledged €200 million in support to Greenland for climate change, education and infrastructure. The package follows repeated demands from US President Donald Trump to acquire control of the island for security reasons. Von der Leyen stated that Greenland's sovereignty must be respected and that its future is solely for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen praised the EU's support during a period of transatlantic tension. The announcement coincided with military exercises in Greenland involving 400 troops from 11 NATO nations, conducted without US participation. The €200 million pledge represents a significant financial commitment to the North Atlantic territory as geopolitical competition for Arctic resources intensifies.
The EU's intervention reflects broader concerns about Arctic security and influence in the region. The move signals European backing for Greenland's autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark. The enhanced support package addresses infrastructure and climate adaptation on the island, areas likely to be strategically important as Arctic ice continues to retreat.
