DAMBRAUSKAS RETURNS TO OLD TRAFFORD AS SABAH MANAGER IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

MON 07 SEP 2026 FOOTBALL

Valdas Dambrauskas will manage Azerbaijani club Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday in a Champions League fixture. The Lithuanian, aged 49, began his coaching career with Manchester United Football Schools roughly 20 years ago. Dambrauskas told BBC Sport that managing at the ground represents a completion of a circle in his career, stating the prospect was "beyond my imagination".

Dambrauskas's path to professional football coaching began with an appearance on the Lithuanian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2002, where he won 4,000 litas, equivalent to approximately £725. That sum represented six months' average wages for a Lithuanian worker at the time. He used the winnings to relocate to London and pursue coaching qualifications, intending to establish himself in football and eventually return to Lithuania as a coach.

The story of Dambrauskas's game show appearance resurfaced on social media two weeks ago when Sabah qualified for the Champions League, though Dambrauskas emphasised he wished his career achievements, rather than his television appearance, to be the focus of attention. His subsequent coaching career has taken him across multiple European countries before his current role managing Sabah in continental competition.
