WHITTINGHAM QUESTIONS UNDERWOOD AFTER MICHIGAN'S NARROW WIN
Kyle Whittingham, head coach of Michigan, criticised the offensive performance of his team following their 13–12 victory over Western Michigan on 5 September. The win came after a controversial 47-yard Hail Mary touchdown in the final seconds. Whittingham expressed frustration with the play of sophomore quarterback Bryce Underwood and the wider offensive unit, stating that Underwood's position as starting quarterback is "not infinite" and that no player's role is secure if performance does not meet the team's standards.
Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Western Michigan. Whittingham noted a discrepancy between Underwood's performance in practice and his public appearances, saying the quarterback had received positive assessments from coaching staff during training camp but had not replicated that form in recent games. The coach also referenced Underwood's struggles during the spring game in April, when he displayed footwork and passing mechanics issues. During the opening drive against Western Michigan, Underwood fumbled a snap but recovered it and threw a successful fade-away pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan for a significant gain, leading to a 1-yard touchdown run.
Whittingham emphasised that job security across the team depends on consistent performance, with no individual player guaranteed a starting position week to week. The coach stated that the standards required extend throughout the entire roster, not solely to Underwood. Michigan's next fixture is against Oklahoma in week two of the season.
