RACING DRIVER RESCUED FROM BURNING FERRARI BY RIVAL

MON 07 SEP 2026 INTERNATIONAL

British racing driver Ollie Millroy survived a severe multi-car crash during the China GT Championship in Shanghai after Dutch racer Loek Hartog stopped his own car to extract him from his burning Ferrari. Millroy sustained serious injuries in the seventh-lap incident, including six broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand and finger, and a partially collapsed lung. Hartog retrieved a fire extinguisher from a nearby official and extinguished the flames himself after no safety marshals or fire crews immediately responded to the red-flagged crash. Millroy expressed gratitude to Hartog on social media, stating he is alive entirely because the Dutchman risked his own life to help him.

Millroy underwent hours of surgery following the incident. His wife stated she could not believe he had survived the crash. Hartog's intervention came after an apparent delay in the arrival of emergency services at the scene. The rapid spread of fire after the initial impact left Millroy unable to exit the vehicle without external assistance.

Millroy's team, AAI Motorsport, announced its complete withdrawal from future China GT events, citing severe safety failings. Race organisers launched an investigation into emergency response shortcomings at the circuit. The incident has raised questions about the adequacy of safety protocols and response times during the China GT Championship.
