RAMS FLY TO AUSTRALIA ON TUESDAY FOR THURSDAY KICKOFF

MON 07 SEP 2026 US SPORTS

The Los Angeles Rams will depart the United States on Tuesday evening, arriving in Melbourne on Thursday ahead of the NFL's first regular-season game in Australia scheduled for Friday at 10:35 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. Coach Sean McVay confirmed the travel plan, describing the approach as a "quick-in, quick-out" strategy designed to minimise disruption to the team's routine. The Rams are treating the trip as a compressed business schedule rather than an extended stay in Australia. McVay stated that keeping players on their normal rhythm takes priority in all decision-making regarding the game preparation.

The Rams' abbreviated visit contrasts sharply with the San Francisco 49ers' approach. The 49ers arrived in Melbourne on 4 September and spent the week at public events and interacting with locals. McVay's strategy is rooted in circadian rhythm management: a 10:35 a.m. kickoff in Melbourne equates to 5:35 p.m. Pacific Time on the United States West Coast, the window when athletes typically perform optimally. Los Angeles sent staff to Melbourne during the offseason to study the effects of the long journey and concluded that maintaining West Coast routine timing offered the best outcome for player performance.

McVay emphasised that the Rams' approach reflects strategic thinking rather than dismissal of alternatives. The coaching staff consulted expertise from people who have undertaken similar extended trips across multiple sports before settling on the method. McVay stated that everything the team does reflects what the organisation believes is best for its players, whilst acknowledging that other approaches may also be valid.
