HARRISON SMITH AGREES ONE-YEAR VIKINGS DEAL FOR 15TH SEASON
Harrison Smith has agreed to a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings worth $12.25 million, with the potential to reach $16.25 million with playoff incentives. The safety will return for a 15th season with the franchise after spending the offseason considering his future. Smith received a standing ovation from a crowd of 66,606 at US Bank Stadium during the Vikings' final regular-season game in January, when head coach Kevin O'Connell called a timeout to honour the veteran.
Smith had previously stated he did not want a formal send-off or tribute upon retirement. However, after the Vikings completed their 2024 season with a 9-8 record, Smith chose to return rather than retire or sign elsewhere. The franchise had released him as a procedural matter to enter the new season. According to one report, Smith committed to the deal approximately one week before the Vikings' season opener, which is scheduled against the Green Bay Packers.
The Vikings organisation has expressed satisfaction with Smith's return, citing operational reasons for the benefit of his presence. Smith's decision to continue playing comes after the team remained uncertain throughout the offseason whether he would retire or attempt another season. His wife and daughter were present during the standing ovation at US Bank Stadium in January, with teammates acknowledging him as he left the field.
