JOVIC DEFEATS EALA IN THREE-HOUR US OPEN THRILLER
Iva Jovic defeated Alexandra Eala in a three-hour match at the US Open third round on Saturday. The two players embraced at the net after the contest concluded. Jovic later described the moment in her press conference, stating that Eala's ability to offer congratulations immediately after such a demanding match reflected her character. Eala broke down in tears away from the court following the loss.
The pair have a long history together, having progressed through junior tennis simultaneously, partnered in doubles at the ASB Classic earlier this year, and previously faced each other at the French Open. After defeating Eala at Roland Garros, Jovic posted on Instagram expressing a wish that both players could have won. The match illustrates a dynamic seen elsewhere in professional tennis: players who maintain close friendships away from competition but compete as opponents on court. Sabalenka and Badosa represent a similar relationship on the WTA Tour, with Sabalenka noting after their 2024 Roland Garros meeting that "it's tough to play your best friend" whilst making clear that "on court we are opponents."
Jovic's next match comes within forty-eight hours against Coco Gauff, who arrives at the US Open having won nine consecutive matches, claimed the Cincinnati title, and advanced through three rounds without dropping a set. The two players have previously met on court. Gauff's opponents in her US Open run to date were Zeynep Sonmez, Paula Badosa, and Cristina Bucsa.
