INFANTINO CONFIRMS RE-ELECTION BID DESPITE WORLD CUP INVESTMENT BACKLASH

SUN 06 SEP 2026

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand for re-election in March 2027, football's governing body confirmed on Sunday, despite widespread opposition to his now-abandoned plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. A FIFA spokesperson stated that Infantino's intention to seek a fourth and final term, first announced in April, remains unchanged. The 56-year-old declined to answer journalists' questions about his future on Saturday whilst attending the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Poland.

Infantino's plan to bring private investment into FIFA events through the FIFA Forward Enterprise scheme sparked significant backlash after its announcement in late July. European football body UEFA accused him of "criminal mismanagement" and led initial opposition, including threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions if the plan was not shelved. UEFA subsequently withdrew its boycott threat on 27 August but has maintained that Infantino must leave his position and has filed requests in the USA for disclosure of documents related to the scheme, with plans to lodge a legal complaint in Switzerland.

If re-elected, Infantino would serve as FIFA president until 2031. UEFA remains the only candidate to have publicly called for his departure and has stated it intends to pursue legal action once documents are obtained. Infantino told Sky News at the tournament that there would be "a right place and a right time" to address the leadership challenges he faces, but the timing was not appropriate during the competition.
