TEN KILLED, DOZENS INJURED IN MEXICO FIREWORKS BLAST AT CHURCH FESTIVAL

SUN 06 SEP 2026

A pyrotechnic explosion during a religious festival in central Mexico killed at least 10 people and injured between 60 and 64 others, according to local government and Mexican authorities. The blast occurred on Saturday night in Temascalcingo, a municipality in Mexico State approximately 160 kilometres northwest of Mexico City. The explosion collapsed a wall next to the Nuestra Senora de la Luz church and sparked a fire in the town square. Video footage showed attendees walking through smoke and debris searching for survivors.

The explosion occurred as hundreds of people gathered to watch a fireworks display as part of a patron saint festival. One account indicated that the blast was triggered when a burning straw effigy of a bull, fitted with fireworks as part of a local ritual, ignited a larger store of pyrotechnic material kept in or near the church. The Mexico State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the cause, which has not yet been determined. A local bishop confirmed that two priests were among the injured; the diocese of nearby Atlacomulco stated that both are expected to survive.

The explosion marks another significant fireworks-related incident in Mexico. In July 2018, a blast at a fireworks factory in Tultepec, north of Mexico City, killed 24 people. A separate fireworks explosion in a city market two years prior claimed 42 lives. The Mexico Attorney General's Office said its investigation into Saturday's blast remains ongoing.
