ANTONELLI WINS ITALIAN GRAND PRIX FROM 19TH ON GRID
Kimi Antonelli won the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, starting from 19th position on the grid after receiving a penalty for exceeding the permitted engine allocation. Antonelli progressed to 14th place after the opening lap, then to 12th when a red flag was deployed following Charles Leclerc's Ferrari crash. He went on to claim victory at Monza, a result Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said he had anticipated before the race began.
Wolff stated on Saturday that he expected one of his two drivers to finish on the podium, citing either George Russell, who started on the front row, or Antonelli, describing the latter's performance as comparable to "walking on water". Wolff attributed his expectation to observed energy levels and mindset from Antonelli during practice sessions, and said Antonelli's father had also foreseen the result. Russell started 17 positions ahead of his team-mate and held a 59-point championship lead entering the race. Pre-race consensus suggested a fifth or sixth-place finish represented realistic expectations for Antonelli, who said after the race that he had considered a podium finish possible.
The result marks a second implausible outcome at Monza in a single weekend, following an unexpected pole position for Pierre Gasly's Alpine in qualifying. Antonelli's recovery from the grid penalty to claim victory ranks among notable Formula 1 performances, according to reported commentary.
