LEARNER TIEN REACHES US OPEN ROUND OF 16 WITH FIVE-SET WIN

SUN 06 SEP 2026 TENNIS

Learner Tien defeated Jakub Mensik 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the US Open Round of 16. The victory marked Tien's first appearance in the fourth round of the tournament. Tien improved his record in five-set matches to 5-0 and claimed his sixth Top-20 win of 2026. He attributed his comeback, after falling two sets to one down, to support from the New York crowd during the match.

Tien became the youngest American man to reach the US Open fourth round since Andy Roddick achieved the feat in 2002. The 20-year-old expressed gratitude to spectators for remaining in the stadium late into the evening. In his on-court remarks, Tien said he was uncertain whether he would have won had the venue been empty, acknowledging the crowd's role in his victory. The match lasted several hours and saw momentum shift decisively in Tien's favour during the final two sets.

Tien now faces a continued challenge as the tournament progresses. His performance marks a significant milestone in his career as he continues his run at Flushing Meadows. The American will look to maintain his form in five-set matches as he advances further in the competition. His progression reflects the emergence of younger American players on the professional tennis circuit.
