MOSES ITAUMA LOSES IBF HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TO FILIP HRGOVIC

SUN 30 AUG 2026 BOXING

Moses Itauma lost his IBF world heavyweight title challenge to Filip Hrgovic in the ninth round at the O2 Arena in London on 29 August. Itauma was stopped in the fight and left the arena on a stretcher. Hrgovic claimed the IBF heavyweight world championship in what one account described as a come-from-behind victory. Itauma, aged 21, had been regarded as a leading prospect for the British heavyweight division.

Itauma dominated much of the contest, scoring a knockdown in the second round and establishing a commanding lead through the early rounds with fast combinations and powerful punching. He cut Hrgovic in the fourth round. However, accounts indicate that Itauma's pace diminished as the fight progressed, with one report stating he "punched himself out" and appeared fatigued. Hrgovic, an Olympic bronze medallist from 2016, mounted a sustained attack as Itauma's physical condition deteriorated. The momentum shifted decisively in Hrgovic's favour in the ninth round, when he stopped Itauma.

Had Itauma won, he would have become the youngest heavyweight world champion since Mike Tyson. Itauma had built a reputation as an exceptional prospect with fast hands and considerable power. Hrgovic's victory represented a significant upset in the heavyweight division, with one account characterising it as "perhaps one of the heavyweight division's greatest" comebacks.
