POLYMARKET REMOVES MAHOMES INJURY WAGER AFTER CFTC INTERVENTION
Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction market platform, withdrew a wager on Patrick Mahomes' availability for the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos on 25 August. The platform removed the listing hours after the Chiefs tied the Seattle Seahawks 9-9 in their preseason finale. According to reports, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) asked Polymarket and other prediction market operators to remove such wagers, prompting the withdrawal.
The NFL has taken an aggressive stance against betting markets centred on player injuries, citing integrity concerns. Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President, has publicly urged the CFTC to permanently prohibit injury-based wagers and stated that betting operators must secure official league approval before launching player-specific health markets. The league's position reflects concern that insiders could manipulate results using advance medical knowledge. The CFTC has proposed sweeping new rules to permanently bar any event contracts based on the occurrence, severity, length or diagnosis of a player injury.
Rival prediction market platform Kalshi has refused to remove an identical Mahomes wager and continues offering active trading markets on several other injured professional athletes. The regulatory uncertainty surrounding injury-based markets has broader implications for the Las Vegas betting landscape. The Chiefs are currently projected to win under 10.5 games this season as a -150 favourite in traditional sportsbooks, according to available odds.
