NEWCASTLE BEAT TOTTENHAM IN ELANGA AND WISSA GOALS

SAT 29 AUG 2026 FOOTBALL

Newcastle United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Tottenham's home ground in a Premier League match. Anthony Elanga and Yoanne Wissa scored in the second half to secure the victory. Tottenham had the better of the first half but failed to convert their chances into goals, whilst Newcastle's forwards capitalised on their opportunities after the interval.

Tottenham had made eight summer signings, with the club's chief executive Vinai Venkatesham emphasising the scale of spending in a programme note ahead of the match. Midfielder Sandro Tonali, signed for £116m, started for Tottenham but received criticism from Newcastle supporters throughout his performance. Forward Omar Marmoush, who joined Tottenham for £60m, started the match 24 hours after signing. Newcastle made their own additions to their squad, with defender Nico González, signed for £50m from Manchester City, making his debut, whilst goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek and right-back Amar Dedic also featured for the visitors.

The result extended Tottenham's poor start to the season. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle described the victory as heartening for his team, which remains a work in progress with further player additions expected. Tottenham's manager Roberto De Zerbi fielded four other summer recruits alongside Marmoush, including left-winger Mathys Tel, who combined with left-back Andy Robertson during the first half.
