SOUTH AFRICA LEVELS RUGBY SERIES WITH 33-26 WIN OVER NEW ZEALAND

SAT 29 AUG 2026 INTERNATIONAL

South Africa defeated New Zealand 33-26 in the second Test of their rugby series in Cape Town, levelling the match-up at one win apiece. The Springboks scored through Jesse Kriel within two minutes, establishing early momentum, before the All Blacks responded with a try from Cam Roigard. Further tries from Damian de Allende and Damian McKenzie kept New Zealand competitive in the opening half, but South Africa pulled clear towards the interval. Siya Kolisi crossed for a try to leave the half-time score at 24-14 to the hosts.

The second half saw South Africa maintain their advantage, with Cheslin Kolbe's kicking proving decisive in controlling play. New Zealand mounted a late comeback, with tries from Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea threatening the Springboks' lead in the closing stages, but South Africa held firm to secure victory. Head coach Rassie Erasmus made a front-row substitution approximately an hour before kick-off, introducing Deon Fourie and Thomas du Toit from the bench after starting with Gerhard Steenekamp. Malcolm Marx and Ox Nché entered play at the 36-minute mark and won two penalties that led to Kolisi's crucial try.

The third Test is scheduled for Johannesburg on Saturday, 5 September, with kick-off at 4pm BST. The series will conclude on 12 September in Baltimore, United States, at 10pm BST. Speaking after the match, Kolisi acknowledged the All Blacks' performance and credited South Africa's coaching staff for their tactical preparation. The fixture forms part of rugby's traditional contest between the two nations, known as Rugby's Greatest Rivalry.
