SEAN PAYTON DEFENDS BO NIX AGAINST ANALYST CRITICISM
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton responded publicly to criticism of quarterback Bo Nix made by FOX analyst Geoff Schwartz. Schwartz had stated on First Things First that Nix resembled the same quarterback he was in college and did not push the ball downfield often. Payton posted a reply on X stating "Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn't," and later told reporters he felt compelled to respond to what he considered factually incorrect analysis.
Payton based his defence on Nix's statistical record. According to Payton's account, Nix holds the record for the most touchdown passes of 20 or more yards since the start of his rookie season, with 19 such passes. Nix is also the first rookie quarterback to record multiple games with at least 300 passing yards, four passing scores and a passer rating of 140.0 or higher. Last season, Nix led the league in passing attempts with 612, completing 63.4 per cent of his passes, and recorded seven game-winning drives.
Payton characterised the criticism as coming from those who do not observe players in depth, referencing the prevalence of online commentary from various sources. In his two years with Denver, Nix has led the Broncos to consecutive postseason appearances. Payton indicated that such on-field performance records were more relevant to assessing Nix's development than external commentary.
